Windows Technical Support

Important Note

This tech support topic applies to the old Cliptures floppy disks and versions of Windows prior to Windows XP. We have not sold the floppy disk versions of any Cliptures volumes in well over 5 years and no longer support them. We do have some customers still running older versions of Windows 3 and Windows 95. The information below may work if you have an older computer system and an old version of PrintShop. We continue to keep this information in our tech support archives in case it is of benefit to anyone but we no longer even have systems old enough to do any further testing or tech support for these older systems and software.

Question

I recently upgraded to Print Shop Premiere and now some of my older Cliptures volumes will not do a "Print Shop Install". Why?

Answer

With the introduction of the Premiere 5 program, Broderbund changed the name of the program to PSPE5.EXE. Versions of the Cliptures installer prior to 9/25/97 did not know to look for the PSPE5.EXE program name. Also, Print Shop Premier does not access graphic libraries the same way as earlier versions of Print Shop.

Solution

You can do a manual installation of the Cliptures volume(s), or, you can order a new Cliptures CD disc.

Note for Cliptures "Fun Borders" users: Premiere 5 will not read backdrop libraries. In order to use the "Fun Borders" volume with Premiere 5, you should order one of the new Cliptures CD discs.

Note: With the release of PrintShop 6 (which does not use PrintShop libraries), Cliptures volumes are no longer available in the PrintShop Library formats. Cliptures volumes are now available individually on CD discs. All of the graphics are in individual graphic files. They are still compatible with ALL Windows versions of PrintShop but they are now also much easier to use with other programs too!

Manual Installation: It is pretty easy to install the Cliptures libraries in with the new Premiere 5. Here is how to do it:

Note: This only works if you installed the Premier 5 using Print Shop's default directories. If you changed the names when you installed the Premier 5, this will not work.

1. First verify that you have Premier 5 installed in PrintShop's standard location. Use Windows Explorer (Go to START -> PROGRAMS -> WINDOWS EXPLORER) to verify that you have a folder called The Print Shop Products. This folder should be at the "root" level of your hard disk which means it is not inside any other folder(s). Inside this folder should be another folder called: The Print Shop Premier Edition 5.0 and inside this folder should be the actual Print Shop Premier 5 program file called: PSPE5.EXE.

2. Run the Cliptures installer. (Insert the Cliptures disk. Go to START -> RUN, Type in A:\INSTALL and click the OK button.)

3. From the Cliptures main installation menu, select the 2nd option: "Full Installation for non-Print Shop Users".

4. If you have more than 1 hard disk, the installer will ask you to select a drive to install the library onto. If this applies to you, select the drive with your Premier 5 program. If you only have 1 hard disk, the installer will skip asking you to select a drive.

5. Next the installer will ask you to "Select and installation directory" and show the default setting of: C:\Clipture. Change this to read:

C:\THEPRI~1\THEPRI~1.0\CLIPTURE

Note: The symbol before each of the 1's above are "tilde" symbols. The tilde symbol is located to the left of the "1" key . (Use the shift key when entering it.)

6. After typing in the installation directory exactly as above, click on the OK button. The Cliptures library and exporter program will be installed into a folder called "Clipture" inside your Premier 5 program's folder.

Using Cliptures libraries with Premier 5:

Print Shop Premier 5 does not access Print Shop format libraries in the same way as earlier versions of Print Shop. Instead of individual libraries, Premier 5 has 1 large file which contains all of its own graphics. Premier 5 will still read Print Shop SQUARE, ROW, and COLUMN format libraries. However, it will not read BACKDROP libraries.

Most Cliptures volumes are in Square, Row, or Column libraries so you can continue to use these in a very similar manner as with earlier Print Shop programs. You can still use your older Cliptures "Fun Borders" volumes (backdrop libraries) with Premier 5, but you will need to export the graphic using the Graphic Exporter program first. (Or, you can order replacement disk(s) as mentioned earlier.)

For your convenience, we recommend that you either reinstall your Cliptures volumes following the steps described earlier, or, that you upgrade your Cliptures disks with the new installation program which will install them for you.

Accessing Square, Row, or Column graphics:

1. Start the Print Shop Premier program and then start any kind of Print Shop project as you normally would.

2. From the "Insert" menu go to the "Graphic" command and click on "All" from the sub-menu. This will open the "Select a Graphic" window.

3. Click on the button called "Other". A "file dialog" window will open. (If you used the Cliptures Installer program's suggested location when you installed the Cliptures files, you should see a folder called "Clipture" inside the Print Shop Premier folder.) Locate the Clipture folder, click on it so that it is highlighted and click on the "Open" button.

4. Once you have opened the Clipture folder, you should see the names of the Cliptures library(s). Select a library by clicking on its name and then clicking the "Open" button.

5. Print Shop will now display the names for the individual graphics within the library. When you click on any of the graphic names, you will see a preview of that graphic on the right side of the screen.

6. Select the graphic you want to use and click on the "OK" button. You will now be returned to the main layout screen with the graphic you selected on your page!

Using the Fun Borders volumes with Premier 5:

As mentioned earlier, Premier 5 will not read Print Shop Backdrop libraries. To use the Fun Borders graphics with Premier 5, you will need to either order an new disc(s) for your Fun Border volumes, or, if you would prefer, you can export a graphic or graphics from the Fun Borders library.

Exporting Images Using the Graphics Exporter

To convert an image:

1. Start the Graphics Exporter program.

2. Use the arrow keys to highlight "Select a Graphics Library" and press the ENTER key.

3. Select the desired library and press the ENTER key.

4. Now you should see a list of the names of the images contained within the selected library.

5. Selecting graphics: You can select a single graphic, several graphics, or the entire list of files to convert. Use the Up arrow, Down arrow, page up, or page down keys to move to and highlight the desired image(s).

*To select a single graphic: Highlight its name and press the ENTER key.

*To select several graphics: Highlight the first graphic and press the Spacebar key. The image will be tagged for exporting. Continue to highlight and tag the additional graphics you would like to export. When you are done selecting all the images you want, press the ENTER key.

*To select the entire list: Hold down the Shift key and press the Spacebar key. All of the images will be tagged. Then, press the Enter key. Note: Exporting an entire list of graphics can take up a large amount of hard disk space!

6. After selecting a graphic and pressing the Enter key, you will see a list of the available graphic file formats. Use the arrow keys to select the WMF format and press the ENTER key. Exported graphics will automatically have the appropriate file extensions added to them. When you export a graphic, the original image is left unchanged in the Cliptures library. The exporter reads the original file data and creates a copy of the image(s) in the file format you selected.

7. Next, you need to specify where you want the exported image(s) saved to. You can save the new file in the same directory as the library (recommended) or change to a different directory by using the same navigational tools mentioned earlier.

8. Once the converted image has been saved, you will be returned to the file selection menu. From there, you can select additional images, change to a different library, or, you can quit the Graphics Exporter.

Importing an image into Premier 5:

Now that you have exported one of the Fun Border graphics, you are ready to import it into a Premier 5 project. Just follow these steps:

1. Start the Print Shop Premier program.

2. Start any kind of Print Shop project as you normally would.
To import a graphic:

3. From the "Insert" menu go to the "Image" command and select "Import" from the sub-menu.

4. A "file dialog" window will open. Now you need to navigate to the folder where you exported the Cliptures image to. (If you used the Cliptures Installer program's suggested location when you installed the Cliptures files, you should see a folder called "Clipture" inside the Print Shop Premier folder. And, if you exported the image(s) to the Clipture folder, they will be right there inside the Clipture folder! If you saved your exported image(s) to a different folder, you should navigate to that folder.) Locate the Clipture folder, click on it so that it is highlighted and click on the "Open" button.

5. Once you have opened the Clipture folder (or whatever folder you exported the image(s) to), you should see the names of the Cliptures image(s) you exported earlier. Select a file by clicking on its name and then clicking the "Open" button.

6. You can move the graphic around the page, enlarge or reduce it, and flip or rotate it. For more information on manipulating graphics, please refer to you Print Shop manual.

That's it!
