Question

I am using ClarisWorks and MacGallery clip art. When I try to insert an image into a document, I go inside the MacGallery clip art folder but I don't see any of the MacGallery clip art files.

Answer

ClarisWorks uses the "Claris XTND translator" system to read various types of graphics and text file formats. If these translators are missing, or the XTND translator list file has become corrupted, ClarisWorks will not be able to recognize MacGallery's PICT graphic file format or other types of document file formats as well.

You can try the following to track down the problem:

1. First verify that the MacGallery files actually exists in the locations (folder) where you are looking. If they don't, you will need to find where the graphics are and try inserting an image again.

If they do: Go on to step 2.

2. Quit all programs and restart your Macintosh. After the computer starts up again, open the System folder.

Inside the System folder should be another folder called "Claris".

Inside the Claris folder, among other things, there should be another folder called "Claris Translators" and a file called "Claris XTND System".

Also, inside the Claris Translators folder there should be a number of files. These are the actual file translators.

If any of these items are not present, you will have to reinstall your ClarisWorks program. This should replace the necessary files that have been removed.

If all of these items are present: Go to step 3.

3. Open the "Preferences" folder located inside the System Folder. There should be a file called "XTND Translator List".

This file can on occasion become corrupted and will interfere with the Claris Translator system working properly. You should throw away this file and try running ClarisWorks again. ClarisWorks will create a new copy of the XTND Translator List file when it starts up. If nothing else has worked, this should fix the problem.

If the problem still is not fixed, you can try reinstalling your ClarisWorks program, or, contacting Apple for ClarisWorks technical support.
